Dragonflies and Ladybirds

Welcome to Dragonflies and Ladybirds
Reception / Year 1

Our class teachers are Miss Cross and Ms Forman, who is covering for Mrs Farrow in her absence.
Our teaching assistants are Mrs Manley, Miss Gill, Mrs Wilderspin and Miss Hockin.
Dragonflies and Ladybirds started out the year as two separate Reception/Year 1 classes with the learning being mirrored in both classes. Through observations, the decision has been made to merge Ladybirds and Dragonflies, with the children moving between each room to access different areas. We have found that this has many benefits including a larger learning environment and increased staffing ratio resulting in increased quality interactions.
This will provide the children with more opportunities to extend and enhance their learning experiences by enabling the children to access a wider range of provision.
Your child will still remain in their allocated class for registration and your child's class teacher will still be your main point of contact.
Our PE day is Monday.
Please ensure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit on that day.
You can contact Miss Cross and Ms Forman on the class emails:
Ladybirds and Dragonflies enjoy Forest School sessions every other week! So far we have enjoyed exploring the area, building shelters, finding and collecting special natural items and playing games.

week commencing 28/11/22

In Ladybirds and Dragonflies, we have been continuing our topic for the term, ‘The Snowman's Journey'.

This week in Maths, we have been looking at clocks, talking about the time and discussing the meaning of the hands and numbers, looking at where they need to be for it to be o’clock.

We have been looking at the days of the week and putting the days into the correct order.

In English, the children have enjoyed the story of the Jolly Christmas Postman and have been making predictions about what might happen next. The children have also been using role play masks to help them to retell and act out the story on our outdoor stage.

In Science, we have been looking at how to keep warm by investigating different materials to see what is best for insulation. We wrapped up one hand like a polar bears paw and waited to feel which hand felt warmer.

Our role play train area has been transformed into a sorting office, post office and Royal Mail train .

The children have been busy posting, sorting and delivering lots of letters and parcels.

In the outdoor area, we have had fun with the puppet theatre with lots of different puppets.

In Geography, we have been looking at capital cities. We have been using the interactive board and globes and maps to find and discover the capital cities of different countries.

The children have had so much fun playing in our World Cup themed football tuff tray, where they have learnt about a new country and the different stadiums. ⚽️

The children have been using scissors, tape and hole punches to make Christmas decorations.

We have enjoyed another wonderful session with Karl and his boomwhackers  !! we came up with our band name the Donington Dragonbirds!!!

The children have enjoyed some lovely quiet time in our new wintery igloo reading area.

Well done Ladybirds and Dragonflies!
